What is DPI and Why It Matters
DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. It describes the density of ink droplets a printer places on paper. While screens display images at 72-96 DPI, professional printing requires 300 DPI to appear sharp and clear to the human eye.
DPI vs PPI
Technically, your digital file has PPI (Pixels Per Inch). When we print it, it becomes DPI. In the printing industry, these terms are often used interchangeably. The key rule: More pixels = More detail = Sharper print.
Standard Print Resolution Requirements
- Business Cards & Brochures: 300 DPI is the absolute minimum.
- Magazines: 250-300 DPI for high-end glossy finish.
- Posters: 150-200 DPI is acceptable as they are viewed from a distance.
- Outdoor Banners: 72-100 DPI is often sufficient for very large scale.
